The Midlife Lady's Guide to a Bad Horoscope
Powers of the Zodiac (Prequel)
Three very different women receive a similar desperate message from their husbands: I've been kidnapped and I need your help. They each must secure a mysterious and powerful magical object for his release.
As they set upon this task, the women discover they have more in common than they originally thought. They also begin to realize that the magic object may be the key to changing their lives...and their destinies.
Excerpt:
My phone beeps and I grab it from the hidden pocket I’d sewn in the dress. Must have gotten a bit of reception finally. I know it’s Bert. I know what he’ll say. And I know I’ll forgive him.
It’s a message from him, but it’s not the apology I’m expecting.
I’ve been taken by some bad people. They want one of the artifacts. Go to the shop and get the bronze globe from the safe. Bring it to me at eleven pm sharp. My life depends on it. I’ll text you where.
I sit up, the chilly night air blowing through my body and freezing my soul.
I’m going to be able to save the day, sweep in and take care of Bert the way I did twenty-five years ago when he was laid up with that broken leg. I still remember the expression on his young, unlined face when he told me, “I don’t know what I’d do without you, Maddie.”
He’d needed me then. And for the first time in my life I’d felt not like the forgettable middle child, but instead as if I was someone necessary and irreplaceable. Like only I had the power to soothe Bert’s pain and that he literally could not survive without me.
Nathan was conceived that night. Maybe I’ve been waiting since then for Bert to need me like that again. Maybe this is our true vow renewal ceremony.
I stand, feeling invigorated, a chorus of “my man needs me” running through my head.
Don’t worry baby. Here I come.
